Define what is Trans cultural Nursing.

Discussion 1-

I feel that alternative healing remedies often get a bad rap in the medical field, especially from those who stick to traditional methods. I feel that patients would often like to try other alternative methods but may get shamed into not trying those methods. I have noticed it more with doctors and nurses who are older and are more stuck in their ways. They are not open to other alternatives or not willing to take the time to try the other options. However, I feel that these alternative methods can be very beneficial and possibly work better than some traditional methods. They are often less costly too. Alternative healing looks at the person as a whole and tries to find the root cause of whatever is ailing the patient. Traditional medicine teaches to look at the whole person but often does not. Traditional medicine is a lot of pharmaceuticals, “Have a pill to help with the symptoms this other pill is causing”. According to Giger & Haddad (2021) alternative methods can be used as complementary methods to traditional medicine. Which is often true with supplements that patients may be taking. However, in my own experience, it seems that any other alternative methods don’t seem to be offered or discussed unless the patient specifically asks about it. Which doesn’t happen often.
I have become more interested in alternative healing methods in the last couple years because I want to be healthier and less reliant on pharmaceuticals. I have also done a lot of reading from published scientists and doctors that are urging people to cut back on pharmaceuticals and try other alternative methods.
I think that every area of nursing could benefit from alternative methods of healing. Patient education is key to trying alternative methods but for any patient to be receptive it will have to be their choice. No patient is going to cure their Type 2 diabetes if they continue to eat a bunch of sugar and no veggies.

Discussion 2-

Alternative healing looks at the whole patient, whereas traditional approach just treats the illness (Giger & Haddad, 2021). Traditional western medical approach focuses on preventive and curative medicine (Giger & Haddad, 2021). Alternative healing is things such as acupuncture, guided imagery, holistic healing, and aroma therapy. Many people use alternative therapy without letting their doctors know. Traditional therapies are normally done through a doctor, where medications are prescribed for the patient, and the patient then goes home and takes the medications. Most alternative therapies can be done in the comfort of your own home.
I have seen a person that I know and tool care of professionally get a coffee cleanse enema for his colon cancer. The patient outlived his diagnosis by 3 years because of these coffee cleanses. This is a very effective alternative to cancer treatment, that at the time was only available in Mexico. I have also seen guided imagery or musical therapy work with patients who have suffered a through a miscarriage. One of my best friends still listens to the music daily, to help her get through it. In my personal life, while pregnant I experienced a lot of nausea. I began using peppermint oil to help with my nausea. I was very pleased with how well it worked.
While working in the emergency room over the past four years, I have seen a huge impact that narcotic drugs have had on patients. I do believe that instead of prescribing pain medications to patients all the time, the doctors should be writing orders for different types of alternative therapies to help the patient’s cope with pain. I have seen patient’s that are on multiple different types of pain medication quit the pain medications and massage therapy as an alternative. Nurses should try some alternative therapies for patients who have been asking for pain medications every hour, when they can only be given every four hours, to help patients decrease the need of pain medications.
