You have proposed a topic and began researching. Now, it is time to put it all together into an essay. For
this assignment, you will make a clear argumentative claim, use researched evidence to support your
point, provide and rebut a counter-argument, and attempt to persuade your audience.
In order to do this effectively, you will need to begin with a strong thesis. This statement should be a
direct response to your research question from the proposal. Avoid being wishy-washy; clearly indicate
what you are arguing for or against in a statement that is easy to identify as the claim. In the essay, you
will want to consider what the other side says but also state why they are wrong or why your point is
better/more correct.
Establish multiple main points that support your overall claim and use evidence to develop the points.
Remember that evidence comes in a variety of forms: data, narratives, examples, and quotations can all
provide support to the points you are making. Be sure to include enough support to make your main
points while maintaining your voice throughout the essay.
Wrap all of this up with an expansion on why this argument matters outside of this essay itself. What is
