Main purpose & mission:
-standardize PM principles/tools, “consistent better practices for business/projects”
-performance improvements
-“centralized management is a period when company adopts the most PM tools” (Barbalho reference)
-Purpose is unique to each company due to its priorities/goals
Challenges/Obstacles:
– lack of basic project management principles in place (ATEK reference)
– no proper communication methods
– leadership buy-in (PMO authority?) (Singh reference)
– lack of resources and budget doesnt help implement PMO (ATEK)
– Lack of defining the purpose of the PMO (measurements in place to confirm its impact) (Singh reference)
– PMO might have to slowly introduce change to prepare staff, combat company culture and gain support as a result the time needed might impact the company’s need to quickly implement change based off industry changes/responses as well as customer demands
– “PMO tension are created as a result of stakeholder’s dissatisfaction” (Barbalho reference)
-assists in keeping sight of long-term strategic goals. For example, companies are experiencing growth and exceeding expectations, they forget business has ups and downs.
