1. As is very characteristic of Gothic Literature and Dystopian Fiction, all four of the texts we studied manage to convey a variety of the flaws to be found in humanity. Most notably, many characters in these pieces are written as exaggerations of these flaws to highlight the impact these will have on humanity if left unchecked.
How do three of the four texts we studied (“The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Birthmark,” “The Lottery,” and “Harrison Bergeron”) use characters to highlight specific flaws in humanity that will have great consequences if allowed to flourish?
○ In the body of your essay, demonstrate an understanding of concepts/elements discussed in class. An effective way of doing this is by framing your observations around these major concepts.
i. Example: Harrison Bergeron attempts to expose the enslavement of the people, as the suppression of their minds and bodies are used by the totalitarian government as a system of control. Once he breaks into the television studio, he declares, “…” (pg).
ii. Example: A typical gothic presentation of a character with heightened emotion encapsulates Montresor in Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” where vengeance clouds his judgment as he seeks to gain power over his rival, Fortunato. Just before Montresor convinces Fortunato to follow him to the catacombs, he reveals to the reader the nature of his murderous motives, saying, “…” (pg).
○ Provide TWO pieces of evidence to support each body paragraph
○ You will have an introductory paragraph, at least three (3) insightful body
paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
○ Include in-text citations and a “Works Cited” page, which will cite three of
the four texts we studied in class so far this semester.
○ The provided rubric will be utilized to evaluate your work.
○ You are encouraged to use the provided templates and graphic organizers
to outline and draft your essay.
○ Helpful Tip: First, generate a working thesis statement, then construct the
body paragraphs, leaving the introductory and conclusion paragraphs to last. This will help you maintain focus, and it will inform you of the content needed in the introduction and conclusion.
