Where are African Americans expected to perform in the academic setting based on their parent/guardian expectation?

Use textbooks, class materials, outside sources, and use APA 7th edition format (Note: first-person expression is expected). Reflect on your experiences and your prior preconceived ideas. Which of those preconceived ideas are now open to re-interpretation and why? What have you learned about yourself and “them” now that the immersion is over?
This 8 – 10 page paper will be a culmination of all you have learned in your cultural immersion experience, as well as classroom learning. Be sure to include the following headings and sections in your final paper and presentation upload:
Identification and Description of the Population (1- 2 pages long. Include credible research and citations to support your writing).
Reflection of your Virtual/Hybrid Immersion/Research Experience (what did you observe/perceive, how were your pre-conceived ideas changed, what surprised you, what is different from your personal culture? (1 – 2 pages).
Reaction and critical analysis of the culture (include research on culture, values, beliefs, and behaviors and compare to your observations/perceptions). (2 -3 pages).
Additional documents in the appendix: Include any pictures, quotes, symbols, links to videos, or music.

**I’ll be researching the African American culture. I am particularly interested in this group because I teach in a school so large, white is not the dominant ethnicity (and if it is, it’s a close number race). My encounters with African Americans are constant every day at school. As an educator, I feel I can only become a better teacher and mentor for my students if I learn more about the ones I spend most of my time with. As a special education teacher, most of the students on my caseload are African American and I have always wondered why? Why aren’t there as many white people with IEPs as there are African American people? Also working as a special education teacher, I deal with behaviors a lot (which I still learning how to master). The children I’ve had on my caseload this year with extreme behaviors are African American children. It makes me wonder if that is a trait or if there is something we as a community can help them avoid and strategically “fix.” Also, as a coach, I see different sides of the African American community by being the biggest supporters for their athletes, or not being present at all.

3) What sports and activities can we help them get involved in that will better their academic success and prepare them for their future?

4) How can we, the academic leaders in their lives, help them become more successful in and out of the classroom without as many disruptions and with more positive choices that do not affect their futures in a negative way?
