Section II deals with the formal compositional qualities of a work of art. This journal will focus on the elements of art and the principle of designs that you learned within chapters 1.1 – 1.10. This will probably be the longest journal for you. Please do this in an essay format. To do this well for most of you by answering all the prompts and have the examples from these works of art to support your statements will take at least 4 pages double spaced. To formally analyze a work of art will help you appreciate the work at a deeper level. Of course, having some background information can give insight about the work but it is not necessary to do the analysis of the FORMAL COMPOSITION. I chose these pieces because they are iconic and timeless works of art that you will learn so much and connect with the material that you studied when you analyze them. KEEP IN MIND THAT “description of artwork is not an analysis of artwork” and “having A DEFINITION OF THE ELEMENT OR PRINCIPLE IS NOT AN ANALYSIS.” Having a description of the artwork will inform your process of analyzing the work. You must contextualize your descriptions of the formal elements of the work so the reader understands how each element influences the work’s overall effect on the viewer by giving the supporting examples from the work. Answer the prompts below in an essay format and organize it into paragraphs in a cohesive manner. 1) Give an example of how DIRECTIONAL LINE is used in each work. Please give a specific examples from the work for each type to support your answers. 2) What is a major difference in the quality of line between Barbershop by Jacob Lawrence and The Scream by Edvard Munch? 3) SPATIAL DEPTH is depicted using various techniques in these works. List a technique from each work. Please give a specific example from the artwork for each technique to support your answers. 4) TEXTURE is implied in these paintings. Please give 1 specific example from each work. 5) Explain how COMPLEMENTARY colors are used for these works. Please give specific examples from the artwork to support your answers. 6) How is CONTRAST present within the two works. Please give a specific examples from each artwork. 7) Is Gestalt, conceptual or compositional present in each work? Explain how it is created for each work? 8) What kind of balance does each work have and how is it created? 9) Is there a main focal point for each work or are there multiple areas of emphasis?
