Brief Analysis Assignment # 1 (Poem) ” Cross” by Langston Hughes

The first essay will be about a poem (or a group of poems).
1. An analysis essay focuses on one, two, or more of the elements that contribute to the
complexity of a piece. Analysis will require you to extricate the element you plan to explore
from the other parts of the work to study that element and make an informed statement
about it.

Brief Analysis Assignments:
In this course you will complete four genre-specific Brief Analysis assignments in Moodle. These
assignments are designed to ensure that you are keeping up with the required reading for the
course and to allow you to demonstrate your ability to think critically about the various issues
presented in the texts. Each response should be between 300-500 words in length (roughly about
two to three paragraphs) and revised for grammar. Your response should be more than just a
summary paired with your opinion of the piece. The responses, ideally, will explore the author’s
purpose, tone, and intended audience, as well as discuss some of the specific strategies and
literary devices that the writer used in the piece. Prompts to help guide responses will be posted in Moodle.
