Based on John Lewis’s March and other course readings, answer the following question:
How did civil rights activists respond to the opportunities (or pre-conditions) and obstacles
they encountered in the 1950s and early 1960s?
To answer this question, begin by defining the civil rights movement in your intro paragraph.
Your thesis statement should identify the most important opportunities and obstacles that shaped
the movement and the tactics activists employed. The wider paper should also explain why
activists chose those tactics.
Your paper should be 3 full pages, double spaced, with 1-inch margins, 12 pt. Times New
Roman Font, and Chicago-style citations. A bibliography is not necessary. Papers should make
extensive use of March and should use at least two additional civil rights readings. You may also
draw on other course materials, such as lectures or the Exploring textbook (chapters 25 and 26).
Outside sources are not permitted.
