1. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition developed a set of criteria for diagnosing malnutrition. Identify these criteria and explain how they are used to determine whether an individual has malnutrition.
2. Explain what the mnemonic MEALS ON WHEELS is used for and what each letter stands for.
3. Describe your current diet and discuss whether it will be appropriate as you age and why, or how it might need to change to improve your chances for optimal aging.
4. Determine the BMI of an individual (with their permission). Explain how you determined his or her BMI, and determine which BMI classification he or she falls into.
Chapter 12 —
1. Search online for the keywords periodontal disease and general health. What is the link between oral health and general health?
2. Search online for professionals who treat the older population. Provide 5 examples — titles and roles.
3. Imagine that you work in a nursing facility and one of your patients has xerostomia, but does not think it is a big deal. Describe what you would say to this patient to explain the importance of treating this condition.
