Throughout all age sports concussions are very likely to happen. Concussions in general can be harmful to one’s health and well-being, but there are various strategies to avoid them and take efforts to fix the problem. As we continue with sports coaches and higher ups should be taking caution to these dramatic blows to the head because this can ruin someone’s career in a blink of an eye. Can there be ways to prevent or lower the risk of a concussion and if there is how can we do this to promote player safety.
During this time period concussions are very common in sports. In this article it states “It is estimated that as many as 3.8 million concussions occur in the USA per year during competitive sports and recreational activities; however, as many as 50% of the concussions may go unreported.” This shows how frequently they can happen and it’s a scary thing because these can be very serious injuries and there are also long term effects. A Concussion is a traumatically produced transitory disruption of brain function that is accompanied by a complex pathophysiological process. Concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) that is usually self-limited and occurs at the less-severe end of the spectrum of brain injuries. According to this article the most dangerous sports for a concussion to occur are football, hockey, rugby, soccer and basketball. These are some of the most popular sports in the whole world. During the time of suspicion of a concussion a athlete must be sidelined from playing immediately and should either be sent to a doctor or evaluated by an on sight trainer. A quote stated in the article “Standard clinical imaging techniques such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are largely ineffective and insensitive in detecting changes in the concussed brain, be it acutely or chronically (Henry 2014). The application of sophisticated tools to probe the concussed brain has highlighted persistent neurophysiological alterations in athletes, even in those who had long since returned to play.” In this quote it is showing that they have used the wrong tools in recent years to try and detect concussions in athletes brains. With this equipment that they used to find concussions they showed progress within two to three
