Celebration Of Knowledge

This module outlines the objectives and expectations of your “Celebration of Knowledge” – referred to as the COK. This is your “final” but will require you to work on it throughout the semester.
For your COK, you are to pick *one* of the issues listed in the instructions (or pitch one of your own), and start researching now. This is an opportunity for you to choose a topic of interest/passion.
You must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of course content relevant to the topic, in addition to the material you learned from outside sources. This is intended to demonstrate cumulative knowledge, so start now!
Celebration of Knowledge Requirements include the following:
Minimum – 1750 words (not including cover and reference pages). Maximum – 2500 words. (Note: one double spaced page is roughly equivalent to 250 words.)
Use APA format. Double space, number your pages, and use APA style headers. Cite all sources appropriately; however, no direct quotes may be used.
Demonstrate your knowledge of class content. Cite relevant class readings in your write-up.
In addition to class readings, cite a minimum of 4 additional scholarly sources that were not assigned. Please check with the instructor if you have questions.
Please note – Graduate students (enrolled in 3760:501) must find 6 additional sources.
The Celebration will comprise two parts:
Part one – Your Reflection (approx. 750 – 1000 words): You will reflect on what you learned from this course and identify how your values, perceptions, and biases have formed for the topics presented throughout the semester. Tie in concepts learned from videos, readings, discussions. Focus on the following questions.
Think back: where and how did your values, biases, and perceptions of poverty (the many topics presented in class) form? What personal life experiences and messages (e.g., from family, school, community, friends, media) have you had that have shaped your values and understanding of poverty? How has this class influenced these values, if at all?
Describe your overall reactions to the topics presented in class and participating in class discussions. What did you find most & least challenging? Most shocking?
Describe at least one strength in working with families living in poverty and one area of bias or growth needed. How do you hope to continue working on growth areas?
Part two – Your (approx. 1000-1500 words): Select your topic and (a) evaluate the individual and systemic contributors to poverty on various levels including macro (e.g., economic, social, and/or cultural) and micro (e.g., family) influences on the individual) and (b) discuss research from a different relevant disciplines (e.g., economics, sociology, psychology, child development, family sciences, education, and public health). Explore the issue in greater depth than we did in class and explain your perspective as informed by the research literature.
