Goal Setting for Seniors: How to Motivate the Elderly and Support Their Progress

This week I would like for you to apply your knowledge, meaning that there may not be direct answers provided in the articles, but given what you know about psychiatric rehabilitation and counseling you can develop a reasonable argument that you can support from the readings. This is an important skill in general, and especially when working with older adults because there are so few concrete examples available. After reading the two articles, answer the following questions.
1. Discuss why personal / recovery goals can be motivating to older adults living with mental illness. Write at least three sentences. Provide at least one citation.
2. Identify and discuss at least two challenges that may arise when supporting older adults with mental illness identify personal goals, and what you will do as a practitioner to overcome those challenges .
3. Frank has been living in supported housing for five years. He is 59 and has not worked in several years related to his psychiatric symptoms. He thinks of the apartment as his home and the people in nearby apartments as his closest friends. He cooks holiday meals for his neighbors, gets involved in supporting both his neighbors and his daughters, and regularly attends AA meetings. Frank is a smoker who recently had open heart surgery. He has some limitations in walking and bending over. He takes medications for high cholesterol, diabetes and emphysema.
Imagine that you are meeting with Frank to discuss goals. Write down what you might say to him to orient him to the goal-setting process (2-3 sentences). Include why goals are helpful, examples of goals that may be relevant to him, how you will help him track his progress towards goals and how you will be a support in the process.
