Style, Tone, and Lauaguage: O’Connor “A Good Man is Hard to Find”

O’Connor “A Good Man is Hard to Find” pgs 367-378
In interviews O’Connor suggests she is a realist writer, particularly a “realist of distances.” We can take her observation to mean that she attempts to illustrate not only the particular, everyday actions of characters, but something much more. In other places she asserts, “it is the business of fiction to embody mystery through manners.” O’Connor was in agreement that her fiction could be called grotesque in the sense that her characters were often exaggerated or distorted. Perhaps you can see this grotesque style in the assigned story.

Figurative language in this story sometimes creates unflattering, even grotesque, pictures and images of characters. Find at least two examples of negative speech. Why do you think the author uses them? What do some of these examples reveal about the characters?
