The essay must be typed and double-spaced, approximately 4 pages, though longer is
fine. DO NOT USE ANY RESOURCES BEYOND YOUR CLASS NOTES, CLASS
RECORDINGS, AND THE TEXTS WE’VE READ, or the movie you’re analyzing.
The course syllabus includes the following: The essay will be graded on the amount of relevant material you bring to bear in answering the questions, how well you are able to connect ideas in a logical sequence, and the degree to which you demonstrate that you understand the positions you’ve
studied.
1. In Pinocchio (Disney Studios, 1940), Pinocchio can be understood as fulfilling his
potential, or becoming a good person in the way Aristotle describes this. Please explain,
with as many details as possible. Be sure to include the role friendship plays.
The best papers will not be identical, though each will cover most of the
relevant material. In addition, the best papers will be organized in such a
way as to make logical transitions from one idea/concept/consideration to
the next. This is an indication that the writer has a clear grasp of how
general lines of argument fit together (as opposed to an essay that is
structured primarily around the order in which concepts were introduced in
class and recorded in notes). The best papers are careful to explain, define,
and/or give examples of the central ideas. This indicates that the writer
understands those and is not merely including terms that s/he knows are
important. The best papers also refer appropriately to the texts under
consideration, using references to bolster or illustrate a point being made,
not as a substitute for the writer’s own analysis. A consistent method of
citation should be used.
