Overview – Is Disney on its Way to Becoming a Monopoly?
Before everything else, please review the topic on Monopoly (Chapter 9): https://openstax.org/books/principles-economics-2e/pages/9-introduction-to-a-monopoly (Links to an external site.)
Also, review the topic on Monopoly and Antitrust Policy (Chapter 11): https://openstax.org/books/principles-economics-2e/pages/11-introduction-to-monopoly-and-antitrust-policy (Links to an external site.)
NOTE: these are not included in the exam, but they are good resources for understanding the essay topic.
Disney has acquired many companies (and is still planning to acquire more), building a huge media and entertainment empire. A timeline of Disney acquisitions can be seen here, if you are curious: https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/2019/11/disney-acquisition-timeline (Links to an external site.)
Many are worried that Disney will become a monopoly in the entertainment industry, but some are calling this an overreaction. Here are two videos which you can watch if you want, showing two opposite views on the matter:
Why a Disney Monopoly is Bad (Links to an external site.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74sZl9U3wo8&t=415s

Do some more research, and write an essay answering the following guide questions:
1. Do you think Disney is close to forming a monopoly in the entertainment industry?
2. Do you think Disney’s acquisitions hurt the competitiveness in the entertainment industry?
3. Do you think the government should stop Disney’s future acquisitions?
Make sure to support your arguments.
