Fairy Tale Journals

The following are journal entries that you must accomplish (which will be replacing tasks listed on our latest syllabus). These entries must be typed and ultimately submitted/uploaded into Canvas. (I will be posting a document under Announcements that might aid the few of you who are still having issues with Canvas submissions.)
Use these as opportunities to do pre-thinking/pre-WRITING for Essay Two. Indeed, feel free to use any of these as the basis of your ultimate topic for Essay Two. (Further, if you do well on these you should have NO issues with your Fairy Tale Exam, which will be worth 150 points.)
*By “tale saga” I mean a selection of tales listed under the same “saga” title, i.e. all of the Little Red Riding Hood tales (LRRH).
You need to select TWO of the following topics and respond in a thorough (one page minimum) response for each. (Do not simply pick what “appear” to be the easiest topics. All responses need to feel thoroughly developed, which is often easier with a more complex topic.) These are worth 25 points apiece for a total of 50 points.
Apply concepts from Tatar’s essay “Sex and Violence…” or Tatar’s “Introduction: Beauty and the Beast” to either assigned version of the Beauty and the Beast tale (or a different version in which you are more interested).
Analyze Carter’s “The Tiger’s Bride.” You can approach it from any/all angles: theme, tone, characters, symbolism, conclusion. Perhaps, how does it compare/contrast with your understanding of other Beauty and the Beast tales?
Explore your thoughts about the Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White or Sleeping Beauty sagas. You can approach this from any/all angles: structure, tone, theme(s), characters, symbolism, conclusions, etc.
Apply concepts from Tatar’s “Introduction: Cinderella” to either or both assigned versions of the tale (“Cinderella,” Perrault’s “Donkeyskin”).
Pick your favorite tale saga and explain why it appeals to you using/analyzing at least one assigned tale; (feel free to add any others). For development you may include: tone, theme(s), characters, symbolism, conclusions, etc.
Pick your favorite tale saga and explain its (perhaps variant) content/structure based on Propp’s “31 Functions.”
