How to write about pathos in an essay?

Pathos is emotion. Usually, we say that the writer evokes pathos in the reader. What that means is, the writer’s words and images have made the reader feel an emotion. What emotion? It has to be a specific emotion. We humans don’t just “feel.” We always feel a specific thing. For example, perhaps the words “snake in the grass” make us feel fear. Or perhaps the words “glittering sword in the hand” make you feel awe. Or perhaps the words “cute snake with diamond pattern” make us feel nostalgic for the pet snake we had as a child. Whatever it is, is is important to note what the reader feels. When you write about pathos, do not say only that the writer evokes pathos. If the writer depicts a child giving a grandparent a gift, and the grandparent smiling warmly at the child, you might say something like, “The writer evokes pathos effectively by making the reader feel hopeful about how we can connect once again with our grandparents.” Make it clear which words in the reading provide that feeling in your mind. For example, in the case of the grandparents, you would add a sentence such as “The gift and the warm smile remind the reader of happy memories and make us feel hopeful that these will occur again soon.” Here the student is clearly thinking about the words “gift” and “smiling warmly”.
