Start by introducing the show and briefly summarizing the scene in the first paragraph. Then, in the second paragraph, identify the televisual element or pattern you have selected and describe it in enough detail so that someone who hasn’t seen the episode can still understand what it is, where it appears, and why it is significant to the larger show. In the third paragraph, you will make a clear claim about how that element can help us, as viewers, better understand the context, genre, or rhetorical situation in which the show was created.
You will want to focus your analysis on just one aspect (or two at most) of the context, genre, or rhetorical situation, rather than trying to address all aspects of all three. For example, you might focus on how a particular pattern in the mise-en-scéne locates the show in a particular genre; or you might consider how a use of diegetic music speaks to a particular intended audience; or you might write about how a technique of editing and/or cinematography relates to a particular social context.
The important thing is for your analysis to show a depth of understanding rather than breadth; in other words, your paper should not read like a list of different aspects of the show’s context and rhetorical situation (this is the author, this is the purpose, this is logos, this is ethos, etc.), but instead reflect a close reading of some meaningful part of it. You may need to do a small amount of outside research in order to write about the context, genre, or rhetorical situation. Just make sure that you are using reliable sources and that you carefully cite those sources, crediting them for any information or ideas you borrow from them.
