Objective: Using the style and philosophy of a selected American author, students will address a contemporary problem and propose a solution in a letter or op-ed. Each of the authors is responding in some way to the era in which they lived, the problems and questions that most plagued society at the time. In this assignment, you will select one of the authors from this course and a contemporary problem that interests you and would interest the author.
For example, you might ask: How would Ralph Waldo Emerson respond to a current environmental issue facing our community? How would Poe solve the opioid crisis? What would Washington Irving recommend as a way to address the political divisions in the nation?
In the Letter to the Editor, you must

Write in the style of the author you selected
2.
Maintain the authors philosophical disposition
3.
Explore possible solutions to the problem
4.
Argue for one of those solutions.
