1) Write a brief essay that explains, compares and contrasts the medical and social models of
disability. For each of the models, describe how that particular way of viewing disability has
impacted on ways in which societies have responded to and provided for people with
disabilities. You will need to draw on course materials and at least one other scholarly
source to support your discussion (15 points).
2) Positive Youth Development (PYD) challenges deficit approaches to understanding how
young people develop into adulthood. Write a brief essay about the benefits of
understanding development from a PYD perspective. Your essay should (i) define PYD and
deficit approaches; (ii) describe ONE of the PYD models discussed in class; and (iii) argue why
strengths-based approaches to youth development are relevant for thinking about the
concept of “One in Four”. You will need to draw upon at least three sources to support your

3) Rozsahegyi (2017, p. 13) describes Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological model as an “all
encompassing, systematic framework for understanding…child development and for
suggesting how this development might be nurtured.” Write a brief essay that describes
how Bronfenbrenner’s model explains child and adolescent development. Your essay should
(i) describe the key features of Bronfenbrenner’s model; (ii) identify and describe ONE
strength of the model and ONE weakness of the model; and (iii) describe how young people
with disabilities may be impacted by TWO of the systems within the model. You will need to
draw upon at least three sources to support your discussion (15 points)
