Following World War II, the United States experienced a booming national economy. Many American citizens gained affluence far beyond the financial suffering of the Great Depression. As the economy grew, the nation saw an explosion of scientific and technological developments, including the polio vaccine in medicine, television for entertainment, and exploration of outer space. However, the Cold War continued to influence America at home and abroad. If America was a shining example of democracy to the citizens of the world, how would its deficiencies in Civil Rights provide propaganda leverage to the Soviet Union? In many ways, the Cold War conflict provided African-Americans with a means to address long standing grievances in education and equal opportunity.
In your initial post, choose either a United States domestic or foreign policy during this period. For a domestic event, assess the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. What was its impact on the early Civil Rights movement? How did the federal government respond to this legal decision? Did the broadcast of events on television in Little Rock, Arkansas, shape American opinion on equal opportunity? If you choose foreign policy, examine either the concept of “massive retaliation,” or one of the events in Vietnam, the Middle East, or Cuba.
