Step 1 Read the scenario.
One hundred third grade students and 15 adults including teachers and parents are on field trip to a regional park near a river known for scenic bluffs. Students enjoy climbing the sandy bluffs looking for fossils, bugs, and plant specimens. Your daughter is on the field trip, and you volunteered to accompany the students as a chaperone. Your professional background is in public health nursing, and you are the designated first aid provider for the field trip.
The region has had several days of rain. Today, there is a light mist falling. One of the bluffs is quite steep, and a mudslide occurs while multiple children are on the bluff. Several children have been trapped by the mudslide. Some are missing. The bluff is located one mile from the parking area; it is one-quarter mile off the main trail with access only by foot or all-terrain-vehicle.
You hear screams and shouts from children and other adults and run to the scene.
Step 2 Explore the nurse’s role in disaster management.
Develop a response to the following questions that explore the nurse’s role in disaster management related to the case study scenario:
What factors influence the response to the case study disaster situation? Consider emotional, physical, environmental, and emergency response services factors. Describe two factors.
What are the functions/roles of the public health nurse in disaster situations such as the one in the case study? Describe two functions/roles.
