Now that we have encountered confidence intervals and hypothesis testing, let’s take a closer look at a these tools “in the wild”
First, read the Spring_2020_Press_Release.pdf. This is a press release concerning the result of a poll conducted by Vanderbilt University’s Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions (CSDI).
After reading the press release, read the pdf file “2020_Spring_Methods.pdf”, which provides details on the analysis that went into the press release.
After you’ve read the methods paper and the press release, write a summary of both the paper and the press release, emphasizing something you learned or something you found interesting. Write at least 300 words. Your summary should mention three concepts that we have learned in class that you saw in either the press release or the methods paper. Make sure that you enumerate those concepts in your summary.
As a conclusion to your summary, in at least 50 additional words, write another paragraph with at least one question you might have about the methods paper. Your question(s) must be very specific. “I don’t get this. Why did we read this?” is NOT AT ALL specific enough. A much better question: “Since the unweighted numbers are so small for the 18- to 29-year-olds, does this mean that 18- to 29-year-olds don’t answer their phone for surveys?”

At least 300 words for the summary: 1 point
At least 50 words for additional paragraph: 1 point
Mentioned something learned or found interesting: 1 point
At least three concepts mentioned: 3 points
Include both press release and methods paper in summary: 1 point
Specific question asked in last paragraph: 1 point
Readability: 1 point
Correct spelling and grammar: 1 point
