In the past decade, federal and state governments have passed a variety of laws governing the recognition of same-sex unions (some for and some against). A 2015 United States Supreme Court ruling appears to require all states to recognize same sex marriages. How would someone who adopts John Rawls’s version of social contract theory answer the question: Is it morally right for a government to endorse heterosexual unions, yet prohibit same-sex unions?
Is this way of determining the morality of same-sex unions a strength or weakness of Rawls’s theory? Why?
