that you and the people around you have.
Through interviews and research, you will
learn about near and far points and their common relationships with aging.
b. Survey at least twenty people (including
yourself). Find people of a range of ages, with
a good number over 40. Ask each person to
measure their near point (NP) (the distance
from their eye to the closest they can see an
object or print clearly), and their far point (FP)
(the furthest they can clearly see objects).
Record these numbers as well as their age. If
the person wears glasses or contacts and can
easily take them off, record values with and
without corrective lenses.
c. Convert all NP and FP values into centimeters.
Make a plot of NP without lenses vs. age and
NP with lenses vs. age on the same graph. Do
the same with the FP values.
d. Share your results with the class by posting
your data tables and plots on Blackboard. We
will discuss the results as a class during the
project presentation day.
e. Complete a 300 – 500 word paper that includes the following. Explain elements of
visual acuity and why people need corrective
lenses (for both nearsighted and farsighted
people). Calculate the prescription needed
for one of your nearsighted subjects to see
far away. Show your calculation using equations in a math editor. Include your data and
plots from steps b and c. Explain, in detail,
what the results of your plots are and what
you have learned from the plots. Use at least
two sources to guide your understanding of
corrective vision and what it means to make a
clear focus. As you write your paper, cite your
sources, including class readings.
