Purpose: The purpose of this assignment
is to analyze the resources of your school community and identify gaps in the
services and/or programming that need to be addressed. Students will
develop knowledge of school and surrounding community through use of an
exercise that explores demographics, student-teacher ratio, specialized
programs, school culture and climate, style of administration, political
atmosphere, neighborhood resources, and community resources. Analysis of your practicum
placement or a school in your neighborhood with which you might be familiar.

7. Student/teacher ratio
or staff/client ratio
How many
students are there per classroom? or clients per program?
How does class
size affect service delivery to students? (program size delivery to
clients)
Are there
procedures or guidelines (formal or informal) for which students are
assigned to specific teachers? (or guidelines for how clients are assigned
to clinicians)?

8. Specialized programs:
What specialized
programs are offered in your school (or agency) and how are students
(clients) placed in these programs?
How are special
education and other targeted services delivered? Is co-teaching part
of the instructional delivery model?
What is
the impact of these programs for both teachers and students? (clinicians
and clients)

9. School culture and
climate: Refer to the following definitions from a Frey &
Dupper article) of culture and climate: Culture

includes the beliefs and expectations apparent in a school’s (agency’s)
daily routine, including how colleagues interact with
one
another, the norms or beliefs shared by students, teachers, administrators and
other staff in the school. (or agency)

Climate is the heart and soul of a school.
It is about the essence of a school that leads a child, teacher,
administrator or staff
member to love the school and to look forward to
being at their school every day.

1. Identify
and discuss the assumptions, beliefs, values and/or philosophies which affect
the culture and climate of the school.
(or agency)

10. Political atmosphere
& organizational structure:
Is the
concentration of power, authority, and decision-making centralized (at the
top of the organization as in the principal, asst. principal, and office
staff) or is it more decentralized (distributed throughout the
organization and delegated to individual teachers, faculty, committees,
parent-teacher organization, student-teacher advisory councils, etc.)?
Who consults
with whom when important decisions need to be made?
Who are the
“insiders” and “outsiders” regardless of positions or
titles?

11. Neighborhood
resources:
What resources
are available in the immediate school (or agency) neighborhood?
Are parent
groups active in the school and are they viewed as a resource in terms of
expanded services and/or decision making?
Are there local
after-school programs that serve the immediate school neighborhood?
Are local
churches or neighborhood organizations involved in the life of the school?

12. Community resources:
What community
agencies partner with the school to provide resources or services either
during the school day or after school (i.e. mental health agency, health
dept., Community Action, etc.)?
Who is the
liaison for connecting with these resources and how are partnership
agreements monitored (i.e. are there formal contracts or memos of
understanding?)

13. Other:
Do you see
significant gaps in services and/or resources that need to be addressed?
If so, what type of data needs to be gathered to begin the process
of addressing these gaps?
Is there already
existing data that could be utilized? What would you suggest as the
next step in addressing the needs?
