Rubric for group presentations:
Peer reviewers and I will use same forms
Your final score will be the average of my score and the average of the peer reviewer scores
All components are evaluated on a scale of 1-5 (5 is highest):
Components for the whole group (75 points possible) 1-5
Content (45 points)
Clearly introduce research question
Clearly motivate importance of question
Clearly describe data, restrictions, time period
Clearly describe research approach, methods
Clearly describe why approach is novel/contribution to the literature
Clearly interpret results in words
Clearly interpret key tables and figures
Clear and accurate summary of findings
Share key points from conclusion
Organization (5 points)
Well-organized
Use of communication aids (15 points):
Graphics reinforce thesis, maximize understanding
Visual aids colorful, large enough
Slides professional. Main points stand out
Presentation has no misspellings or grammatical errors
Overall presentation impression
To aid the above, presentation MUST answer the following questions:
You may NOT include any direct quotes, or you will get NO credit.
Include a citation referencing the assigned paper using the proper format (economists often use Chicago style—in the text include the author’s name and publication year such as Abrams, Clarke, and Mehta (2021) and Chicago for the reference listed at the end).
As with all of your work, please write clearly and concisely.
In your prose, be sure to address the following questions:
What research questions do the authors examine in this article?
How does the incentive program work?
What two explanations do the authors give for why the additional commitment option had stronger long-run effects extending after the end of the commitment-contract period?
What is the primary data source the authors use?
During which months and years did the experiment take place?
How many subjects were part of the experiment?
What did the treatment and comparison groups get in the initial four week period? Describe the different incentives for the four groups in both the treatment and control groups.
How do the authors ensure employees didn’t cheat (i.e., log in to the gym and not exercise to earn the incentive)? And, if there was such cheating, why isn’t it such a concern to the authors?
Describe the authors’ concerns about extrapolating the results of their experiment to the population as a whole? What do they recommend if one were to extrapolate the results of the experiment to the entire population?
Why did the authors choose to incentive gym attendance and not weight los?
Describe the second-level treatment.
Describe the difference in the emails received by the incentive+commit group and the incventive-only group after the introductory four weeks.
Consult Figure 1A and the corresponding text. Describe the effect of the incentive, the commitment contract, and then the lasting effects after the end of the commitment-contract period.
What do the authors observe happens to gym attendance in the long-run? Is there a difference for those offered incentive+commit or incentive-only?
What does Table 4 tell us about who was likely to take up the commitment option? (Ignore the results by male/female. There might be a typo in the text? I read the table as men being significantly MORE likely to make commitment contracts. But the text notes women more likely?)
Describe (in words) the concerns the authors have with substitution
Describe (in words) the concerns the authors have with cross-talk
What share of the incentive payments went to new exercise and what share went to employees for exercise they would have done even without the incentive?
For students presenting this paper, BE CERTAIN to also address:
Does the prior literature suggest that health behaviors are responsive to financial incentives in the short-term?
What does the literature show happens in the longer term, once the incentive programs end?
Describe, in detail, the setting of the experiment
How were subjects recruited?

Describe the level they chose and the reasoning for why did the authors pick the level of attendance they chose for the commitment contract?
Present Tables 1A and 1B
Interpret Figures 1A, 1B, and 1C. Were the effects bigger for those who were already gym members or nonmembers?
