Write a response for Discussion: Pairing Technology With Teaching StrategyThe educational topic I have chosen for the patient learner group will address the immediate educational needs of the hospitalized patient who is newly diagnosed with diabetes. A characteristic of this group of learners includes a preexisting mental health diagnosis. When people with disabilities are encountered in health and illness settings, nurses are responsible for adapting their teaching strategies to help them learn about health, illness, treatment, and care (Bastable, 2019). The complexity of illness and literacy levels among patients must be assessed prior to implementing the lesson plan. The lesson plan should be developed to be adaptable to those individual characteristics.
The teaching strategy to be used on this learner group is the one-to-one discussion. In the hospital setting where the patient will receive the education, the nurse creates an environment promoting self-paced learning while minimizing interruptions and distractions. Multimodal teachings strategies have demonstrated enhanced learning. The purpose of developing blended learning is to combine the best characteristics of classroom learning (face to face) and the best characteristics of online learning to increase active independent learning by students (Ahmad et al., 2021). With the purpose of leveraging engagement and motivation, many instructors are exploring tools that enable active participation, and real-time assessment and bring different dynamics to the classroom (Cruz et. al., 2021).
Kahoot! (www.https://kohoot.com) is a question-based online learning tool used to evaluate the results of the student learning process, repeating the subject matter and stimulating students’ interest in learning conduct discussions both in groups and classically about the questions provided by Kahoot! (Ahmad et al., 2021). One of the advantages of using Kahoot! is the ease of use that can be accessed using any device that has internet capability. Once the teacher creates a questionnaire and shares it, an access code is generated for students to use when they open the browser or the smartphone application (Cruz et al., 2021).
The one-on-one-discussion teaching strategy is initiated in the initial phase of diagnosis to prepare the patient for discharging home with a basic understanding of managing diabetes. Incorporating into the verbal discussion are handouts featuring character images identifying signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia. The utilization of the teach-back method will be supported at this time to validate initial patient comprehension. Content should be sequenced in a way that enables the learner to integrate concepts and recognize relationships between important principles (Dickerson, 2017).
Following the completion of the one-on-one discussion that incorporates short pieces of information, the patient will then access Kahoot! via a hospital-based device. The application will be accessed by the educator and the patient will be given instructions on navigating through the site. The integration of the technology of Kahoot! will provide an interactive online supplement with brief short questions that the patient will answer. The patient will be asked if they request the educator to remain at the bedside during the Kahoot! interaction. During the discussion, the learner will be assessed on their ability to continue with learning and adjustments made as needed. The patient with mental illness may experience decreased concentration and become easily distracted (Bastable, 2019).
