The term paper must be a minimum of 4 pages long double-spaced with one-inch margins.
Use Times New Roman 12.5 font.
You must have at least one primary source from a scientific journal (Nature, Science, etc….).
All references must be cited in a separate page. (Reference page does not count towards the total
length of the paper).
Please include a section at the end of the term paper to indicate work distribution.
Structures for the presentation and term paper
• Introduction: Briefly introduce the virus/disease • History:
o When and where the virus was discovered and by whom?
o Any historical references to the virus?
o How it was isolated?
o Are there any common names for it?
o Has there been any epidemics or pandemics?
• Taxonomy and Biology:
o What family and genus the virus is part of? Are there multiple strains?
o What is the shape and structure of the virus particle? Is the particle enveloped? Does the
particle package any proteins or is it just the nucleic acid?
o What is the genome organization of the virus? (RNA or DNA. Single-stranded or double
stranded? Is the genome segmented or continuous? Is the genome circular or linear?
o How is the virus transmitted? Does it have multiple hosts? Is there a reservoir species for
it?
• Replication:
o Please use a detailed image of the viral replication cycle taken from a scientific
journal. You are expected to talk in detail about the viral proteins and their role in
replication.
o Where does the virus replicate? Does it use any of the host enzymes and proteins to
replicate?
o What are the symptoms of the virus and how long does it take for them to manifest?
• Control
o Are there any vaccinations available?
o Are there any medications that can be used to treat it?
o What are some of the measures that governments and other authorities have taken control
the spread and transmission of the virus?
• Economic/Social Importance
o How many people have been affected worldwide?
o What is the mortality rate of infected people?
o How has this virus affected local and world economies? (i.e. When SARS first broke
many studies abroad programs were cancelled to China and other Asian countries.) o What is the cost of treating the virus?
o Have any industries been affected by the disease?
Note: All references must be cited at the end of the presentation and term paper. Each figure used in the presentation should have the reference mentioned in the slide.
