Students will submit a one-page proposal of a philosophical argument and why it is important to the broader culture of sport and physical activity (PA). For example, swim caps for African American women, Transgender athletes, performance enhancement are current issues that require discussion. Students must apply one of the three lines of reasoning (i.e., Inductive, Deductive, or Intuitive) to discuss their position on the issue. This initial position will be written in accordance with guidelines provided in the “Assignment Format” section of this syllabus. This assignment is worth ten points and will be graded based on the rubric below:
Required Content
Originality. The proposed argument must demonstrate either a new philosophical issue to consider or present an original perspective to view a current issue.
Grammar and spelling. Students must demonstrate college level writing. Contractions are not permitted. Use of a dictionary and thesaurus are strongly encouraged. Proper punctuation rules apply.
Proper formatting (7th edition APA). Students must properly cite their sources and record their references. Students are encouraged to either purchase a copy of the 7th edition APA guide or use the following link: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.html
Proper use of course terminology and concepts. Students must demonstrate their understanding of terms and concepts by incorporating them into their writing. The best way to show knowledge is to teach others!
Expression of individual thought. The aim of the project is to articulate YOUR position and ideas on the subject discussed based upon information provided by the sources examined. However, use of first-person writing must be limited. Additionally, use of “beliefs, thoughts, and opinions” are not permitted. These are complex and relative. Stick to the facts.
