Marriage – Research & Analysis Essay

Project:
We are learning that God intended for there to be a clear connection between sex, marriage, and raising kids. Your job is to examine the actions and attitudes of our culture to see how they stack up with God’s intended plan for marriage (which includes sex and raising children).

Project Description:
You will write a 4 page paper that examines our culture’s attitude and actions toward marriage (once again – this includes sex and raising children since God intended for them to all exist together and not separated) and then critique it from a Biblical perspective. In essence, you are going to look at what ways our culture lives in God’s principles and then what ways it does not. You are then to spend time in your paper explaining what you think the ultimate results of our culture’s attitudes and actions will be (using the Bible to guide your analysis). Your paper should include at least 8 Bible references.

Due Date:
Paper must be submitted on turnitin.com by 11:59pm on April 13th. You will occasionally be given time in class to work on this paper. Failure to use this time on the project will result in your grade being lowered on the paper.

Guidelines for paper:
-Your paper must by typed and double-spaced.
-You can only type in Times New Roman or Calibri font – no larger that 12. No bold, caps, or italics.
-Your paper must be grammar and spell-checked.
-Title pages do NOT count as a page***
-There should be no spaces or gaps between your paragraphs and there should be 1 inch margins all the way around.
-If you want to reference a Bible passage (and it is part of your grade), do so in a footnote. Carefully read the attached sheet about citing sources.
-4 pages means 4 FULL pages!
-Plagiarism of any sort will result in an automatic zero and an office referral. (Anything greater than 25% on turnitin.com will not be accepted)

Grading:
-The essay is worth 100 points.
-Failure to follow paper guidelines will result in an automatic 30 point deduction
-I will proofread and return papers given to me before April 8th. I am more than willing to help you with your paper – but you need to work on it early. Don’t expect me to give you all of my time if you wait until the last few days.

Citing Sources & Footnoting in Papers

It is imperative that in your papers, you cite where you got your information from. It takes just a few moments, but it protects you from plagiarism and gives credit to the person or people whom you learned from. There are three times to cite a source. They are:
Anytime you take a direct quote from another source (book, website, etc.) You not only cite, but you put in quotation marks.
Anytime you type information that you did not know before you started the paper and you learned from your research. You must put it into your own words and then cite the source.
For the purposes of this paper, anytime you want to use a Bible verse you should put it in a footnote in the following format (Book Chapter:Verse, i.e. Matthew 15:10)

How to put a footnote into a paper
At the end of a sentence (or occasionally, at the end of a few sentences) you put a period and then a footnote.
In Google Docs
Click on “Insert” at the top.
Choose “Footnote” on the dropdown menu.
In Microsoft Word 2007 & 2010, this is done by the following:
Clicking on “References” at the top of the screen
Clicking on the “Insert Footnote” that appears just under and to the left of “References”
When the little number appears, you enter the source in MLA style.
