Write a summary discussion of the following two texts:

– Gupta, Joyeeta. 2019. The Puzzle of the Global Commons or The Tragedy of Inequality
For each author address
1) What is the main argument?
2) What are some facts/examples they use to make their points?
3) Assess the validity of the argument critically. To what extent do you agree/disagree with the
argument developed. How interesting did you find the text?
4) In a final paragraph, briefly compare the two texts. How do the authors differ in their main focus,
concern or opinion, to what extent may there be agreements and overlaps?
Overall length: – 400 to 600 words for each author, about 150-200 words for concluding remarks.
– Total assignment length will be between about 1000 and 1400 words (for reference, this prompt is
about 400 words)
– Try to stick to the word count. If you end up above it, edit it down: delete, rephrase, condense,
consolidate. (But you will not be marked down for going over a little bit.)
– Note word count at the top of the page.
References: – Put full bibliographical references for texts discussed at the top of the page. You can copy
the bibliographical reference from the syllabus.
Citations: – Use your own words and only cite short passages directly from the text (if at all).
– When you directly cite a text passage from one of the readings, provide page number (p. 15).
Style: – Clearly organize your argument and avoid repetition.
– Avoid statements like “I agree with the author” without explaining why.
Be selective and go for big picture: These texts cover considerable ground, so you need to carefully read
the texts first, then decide what is the most important part and try to synthesize your summary analysis
and concluding remarks.
GRADING will be based on:
– Effort to identify key arguments and how the author backs it up.
– Organization, clarity of writing and grammar.
– Be concise and precise, avoid vague formulations and repetition. Proof read before turning in.
