The research paper will tell the story of a neighbourhood or community. This story can be told in different ways. Students will either;
• detail the historical development of that neighbourhood, from its history as an indigenous
place to the present;
• choose one notable event in the history of that community and describe it in detail; or,
• choose one current or historical issue that highlights a conflict or a problem in that
neighbourhood.
Students are expected to link these histories, these events and these issues to broader themes and topics that we have discussed in this class.
Neighbourhoods
Students can choose one of the 140 neighbourhoods that are designated by the City of Toronto and that are listed by the City on this website;

Many of these neighbourhoods comprise multiple communities, and students are free to choose specific communities within these neighbourhoods. For example; one of the neighbourhoods listed is the Yonge-Church Corridor. A student could choose to write their paper on the Church Street Village, a community that is a part of this larger neighbourhood.
