As we make our way through short stories
from some of our finest writers, it’s worth
stepping back to examine how we, as readers,
feel about the main characters. Do we like them?
Are they flawed characters that can do bad
things? Or are they bad people we root for
because they occupy the position of Protagonist?
In 3-5 pages, explore and prove whether
or not an unlikable character makes for a good
story. Which protagonists in which stories that
we’ve read stand out to you? Is being unlikable a
core componet of what makes the story good, or
are there other elements of these stories that
make them work regardless of the character.
You must cite examples from at least 2 of the
stories we’ve read so far this semester. Your
essay should include examples directly from the
text and should explore specific characters.
