You are to write a research paper about some aspect of healthcare policy. You are to follow this rubric and show the subheadings:
Title
What is the healthcare policy that you wish to explore? This needs to be detailed for a) the type of issue for b) what population and c) by what organization?
For instance, let’s say I am interested in mental health. A good paper would tell me about what type of mental health policy issue for what group of people and by what institution. Let’s say I am interested in mental health of older people in a nursing home who have lost a spouse or family member – how can the nursing home staff help them? Or let’s say I am interested in mental health of elementary school students in Salem who are depressed, anxious, and cant focus and are suffering from the effects of COVID. Or what about high school students in Massachusetts who are dealing with suicidal thoughts? All of these are dealing with mental health – so if you want to look at mental health, you need to be very very specific about what population you’re interested in. If you say “I’m going to study mental health policy” in general – that will be insufficient to earn you good grades.
Why did you select it?
Ideally you should pick something that is of personal or professional interest to you. Let’s say you are interested in working in the criminal justice system and you want to focus on healthcare policies of detained inmates. This paper could help set you up for an internship or a job in the field. This is different than if you are interested in working in early childhood, where you may be better off examining healthcare policies of daycare centers in Massachusetts. See what I mean? Pick something relevant to you.
What is the current policy of the topic you have selected?
No matter what you pick, there is an existing policy on it. Find out what they are. Sometimes they are clear, sometimes hard to find. Sometimes there are state standards, sometimes there are professional standards, sometimes there are policies for an exact institution. FIND OUT AND DOCUMENT THEM. Show me what they are.
How did that policy come about? This means that you need to do an extensive literature review about the history of the issue, how and why it became a healthcare concern, different strategies that have been used to deal with it, stats and facts. This requires an extensive literature review. Use a APA format – here is a link to the Purdue Owl that can help you – https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html
There is always a history of a policy and topic, so do a good job researching what they are. I want an extensive history. I want statistics, facts, and for you to show me that you are becoming an expert in your field.
How good is the current policy? What are its strengths – and what are some of its weaknesses, challenges, and obstacles?
This means that you need to know what to look for. Don’t say “it’s good” or “it’s bad” and think that’s enough – I want details about WHY it’s good or bad..
If you were going to revise the policy, what would you recommend – and Why?
