The second written assignment
requires you to go a big step further and do your own scholarly analysis,
applying one of the scholarly methods we’ve covered to a text of your
choosing. This assignment is a kind
of scholarly research paper. You are
required to thoroughly research your chosen method and previous scholarly
analyses related to the topic. Do not
write an extended essay. Instead, engage
yourself in interpretive
communication research. To get started, review the assigned articles
on the various scholarly methods we’ll be covering in the course. These articles explain the key concepts
involved in these approaches, and many of these articles provide either brief
or extended examples of how to critique a text using these methods. Once you know what analytical tools are
available to you, find a text that you’d really enjoy analyzing. Choose a text that stimulates your thinking
about communication in ways that invite your scholarly scrutiny. You’ll need to obtain an objectified version
of this text (i.e., a videotape copy of a movie or TV show; an audiotape or
podcast of a radio show; downloads of online content; the full collection of
materials released as part of a public relations campaign). Then identify the method best suited to the
task of interpreting the text’s significance. Think about your analytical
responses to the text, re-read the relevant assigned course material, pursue
additional research, and then zero in on your chief response, or line of
enquiry – that is, an argument that frames your telling of those data as are
pertinent to your chief response. Your
resultant thesis is a compelling and clear summary of your chief point, which
you should make by the end of your introduction, and then further explore
through the remainder of your paper, developing it in interesting and original
directions.
