Complete a close reading of the selected secondary
sources. You will then write a letter to the Editor of The News &
Observer (Raleigh, NC) newspaper arguing whether or not the North Carolina
legislature did the right thing when they authorized reparations for
sterilization victims. In your argument consider the ethics of forcibly
sterilizing someone without their consent or knowledge. You should also
consider whether or not reparations right the wrong that was done and what
paying reparations to sterilization victims means to victims of other wrongs
such as slavery. You should also consider the idea of modern society paying reparations
for a wrong in which they had no part. Can and should present society pay for
the wrongs of the past? If you disagree with reparations as a solution, put
forth an alternative solution that makes amends for the past on a scale equal
to the reparations.
