ASSIGNMENT #2
Assignment #2 is a Literature Review: a survey of scholarly sources on a specific topic. It provides an overview of current knowledge on an issue, requiring you to identify relevant theories, methods, and themes in the existing research.
Before you begin searching for literature, you need a clearly defined topic. Your topic must directly connect to the course theme of the ways cultural practices police the body. Your topic must also be specific enough so that you can conduct meaningful research: “Body modifications” is much too broad, since it will generate thousands of articles on a wide array of issues. “Employment discrimination and body modifications” allows for more focused research. “Employment discrimination and visible tattoos on women” may provide an even narrower lens.
A good literature review doesn’t just summarize sources – it analyzes, synthesizes, and critically evaluates to give a clear picture of the state of knowledge on the subject.
There are three main steps in the process of writing a literature review:
Search for relevant literature
Evaluate sources
Identify themes, debates and positions
Step 1: Search for relevant literature
Start by creating a list of keywords related to your research topic. Note that you may need to clarify, narrow, or redefine your topic during this step. As stated above, searches that generate numerous, unconnected articles suggest your topic is too broad. Likewise, searches that generate relatively few results—or sources offering essentially the same ideas—suggest your topic is too narrow.
*Your Literature Review must include 6 relevant articles, only 2 of which may be popular.
Make sure the sources you use are credible. You may also need to limit your sources to those published within the last 10 years or so in order for them to be relevant.
Step 2: Evaluate and select sources
You will not be able to read absolutely everything that has been written on the topic. You will therefore have to evaluate which sources seem most relevant to your topic. You will also have to consider how the arguments relate and make decisions about what to include in the Literature Review.
When evaluating a publication, ask yourself:
What question or problem is the author addressing?
What are the key concepts and how are they defined?
What are the key theories, models and methods?
What are the results and conclusions of the study?
How does the publication relate to other literature in the field? Does it confirm, add to, or challenge established knowledge?
How does the publication contribute to your understanding of the topic? What are its key insights and arguments?
Step 3: Identify themes, debates, and theories.
Once you have selected the sources for the Literature Review, ask yourself:
What is the relationship between the sources?
What important ideas do the sources share?
Are there significant differences in positions, approaches, or assumptions?
How do these sources work together to generate an overarching statement on the ways researchers think about the issue?
*This overarching statement is your thesis.
The body paragraphs of the Literature Review will support your thesis by both summarizing the main points of each source and synthesizing these sources so that they demonstrate important themes in the literature.
You should conclude the Literature Review by discussing the overall relevance of the scholarship on the issue. What impact might major ways of thinking have on the body issue you have researched?
In order to complete Assignment #2, you must do the following:
Present a thesis on the literature relating to a topic on policing the body;
Carefully summarize the texts, identifying the main arguments, important ideas, and overall purpose;
Synthesize sources to recognize important themes/patterns/debates in literature;
Cite directly relevant textual material;
Explain how the citations support the thesis;
Meet the source requirements;
Meet the conventions of academic discourse, including a correctly-formatted Works Cited page.
Required Length: 6-7-pages, not counting the Works Cited page;
Papers must be Times Roman 12-point font, double-spaced, standard margins.
