Topic: You may develop any chemistry (or strongly related area) topic that is of interest to you.
As a review article, the topic needs to be broad enough to allow room for exploration and
development but narrow enough to maintain a solid focus. Your final review article topic must
be approved by Dr. Moore.
LENGTH: There is no specific page minimum or maximum for this review article assignment. I
am looking for a well written, thoroughly referenced, high quality paper. Although there is no
required number of pages, a reasonable estimate would be that the body of the text is 8-12
pages in length with your references and any figures used in addition to the body of the text.
FORMAT GUIDELINES: Review articles must be formatted using the guidelines for authors
publishing in Chemical Reviews, an ACS publication. These guidelines will cover manuscript
preparation, construction of tables and/or figures, reactions and structures, references, and
anything related to the complete preparation of a review article manuscript.
FIGURES: Figures are not required but selective use of chemical structures, charts, graphs,
reaction schemes and/or other types of figures can greatly enhance the clarity of your paper.
REFERENCES: You must have a minimum of 10-15 references.
CONTENT: Use mainly primary sources, i.e., scientific/research journal articles. Magazine
articles are not to be used. There is a lot of good information on the internet, however you may
not use more than 1 web-page URL cited as a reference. Part of the reason for this assignment
is to familiarize you with finding and interpreting journal research articles. The majority of your
references should be reasonably current (published within the last 5-10 years) research articles.
You may use 1-2 book references if necessary; however, they should not be textbook
references.
