Final Paper
The final paper will be five single-spaced pages with standard formatting (the equivalent of ten double-spaced pages), not including references, etc. (This is roughly 3,000 words – but there is no word limit.) Citations should follow any common format: e.g., Chicago, APA, etc. You may choose a topic covering anything directly related to the course material – I am very open regarding topics – but use (engage with) at least one of the required books to help make your argument (even if you are arguing against the position taken in the book). If you have any difficulty deciding on a topic, here is one suggested topic:
1) At the next National Congress of the CCP, it is decided that the Party will solicit hundreds of opinions on how China’s economic and foreign policy should be (re)structured over the next twenty years. The CCP has two grave concerns: that ever-widening wealth and income inequality within China and around the world may undermine social stability, potentially provoking revolutions and wars that may negatively affect both China and the global community; and that climate change/climate disruption and environmental degradation are threatening human civilization in the long run, and social stability in the short run. As an independent scholar, you are hired to provide a proposal. How would you advise the CCP to (re)structure its economic and foreign policy to achieve the following two goals: 1) a harmonious society, particularly in the form of reducing wealth and income disparities both within China and throughout the world; and 2) an ecologically sustainable civilization, both within China and throughout the world. You may choose to provide a lot of detail about one particular aspect of the plan, or to provide a broad summary of an ambitious plan to achieve these two objectives; or, you could make an argument about why these two goals are inappropriate. Use the reading materials assigned in the course (and others, if you like) to inform your proposal.
