Write an essay in which you convey what you most want out of life, an essay that reflects your most fundamental values, desires, and aspirations. In doing so, please address at least two of the following five questions. Of course, you can address more if you wish!
What kinds of activities do you want to be a regular part of your life, and what draws you to those activities? (Examples of activities discussed by former students include learning, drawing, writing, cooking, reading, raising children, working to foster equity and human rights, meditation or prayer, hiking and camping, playing basketball, fly fishing, woodworking, sharing meals with loved ones, and traveling.)
What kinds of character traits would you like to strengthen, and what might you do to strengthen such character traits? (Examples of character traits discussed by former students include wisdom, love, courage, compassion, resilience, generosity, mindfulness, creativity, self-love, self-awareness, spiritual depth, and a growth-oriented approach to life.)
What does genuine friendship mean to you personally, and what qualities do you most value in close friends? (Examples of qualities discussed by former students include attentiveness, joy, open-mindedness, creativity, empathy, spontaneity, trustworthiness, a sense of humor, a love of learning, aesthetic sensitivity, and the ability to share experiences in silence.)
What would you like to study and learn about over the course of your life, and why? (Examples of topics discussed by former students include topics within fields such as philosophy, literature, astronomy, Spanish, theology, Buddhism, Native American traditions, history, ecology, art history, woodworking, music, psychology, and graphic art.)
What sorts of physical surroundings do you most desire, and why? (Examples of physical surroundings discussed by former students include surroundings characterized by artwork, indoor plants, outdoor trees and/or woods, creative architecture, an absence of noise pollution, nearby centers of cultural activity, walking or biking trails, and bodies of water such as lakes or rivers.)
Again, your essay should be at least 800 words in length. Please make sure that sentences are clear and grammatically sound. The essay should be well organized and easy to follow. Please include at least five different paragraphs, each organized around a central idea or theme. (Of course, you are entirely free to include more than five paragraphs! Five is just a minimum.) Be sure to proofread your essay to eliminate typos. In philosophy, an essay is a more polished piece of writing in comparison with a discussion assignment.
The essay is worth 50 points. The rubric that will be used to assign points is just below this set of instructions. Please be sure to turn in the essay by the due date: Tuesday, May 10th at 11:59 p.m. If you anticipate any problems in meeting this deadline or if any obstacles prevent you from doing so, please let me know as soon as possible. The absolute deadline for turning in work for our course is Friday, May 13th at 11:59 p.m.
When you are finished working on your essay, simply upload it and submit it. You can initiate the submission process by clicking on the blue rectangle (near the upper right-hand corner of this webpage) that highlights the words “Start Assignment.” Please be sure that the document you submit is either an MS Word document or a PDF document. If you run into any difficulty in submitting your essay, let me know as soon as possible.
As always, please be sure to abide by principles of academic integrity. An essay that includes plagiarized material would not receive any points. If the software indicates that sentences or significant parts of sentences have been “lifted” from other sources, then I cannot give credit for the essay.
