that surround us. How does this relate to how femininity and masculinity are defined in society and
presented in advertisements, according to the film “The Codes of Gender?”
Go online and find an example of an advertisement that represents these codes of gender as discussed in
the film. Copy an image of this advertisement and paste it to the end of the essay. Write an essay
explaining why you think this advertisement displays the societal definition of femininity and masculinity
as discussed in the film. Then, discuss the social consequences of such a definition of femininity and
masculinity at both the micro- (individuals and small groups) and macro-levels (structural and
institutional). Finally, give examples how this has impacted your own life at the micro and micro-levels.

Essay B: Straightlaced—How Gender’s Got Us All Tied Up
Using examples in the film “Straightlaced,” explain how you have experienced the process of gender
socialization in your own life and how similar and different it is or was to that of the students in the film.
In your essay, include examples of a) the different agents of socialization, b) the sanctions you
experienced (directed at you), enforced (you directed at others), and observed (directed at other by
someone else) to maintain the social gender roles and norms (remember, sanctions may be positive or
negative, and as members of society, everyone experiences them), and c) the structures of gender
socialization, that shape your life. Be specific in your response to the question.
