This essay includes the key CORE concepts of “Visual Communication” and
“Social Responsibility.” Your textbook discusses the works of two exceptional
artists whose works were sometimes painted illegally on the sides of buildings.
We know the name of the first artist discussed, Jean-Michel Basquiat.
See an example of his work in Chapter 5, page 90 in your E-textbook.
This particular work is not an example of his street art, but there are many
examples online.
Probably the most relevant artist of this genre today is Banksy.
We do not know his name. He keeps it secret for some reason.
Why do you think he keeps it secret?

Your essay assignment is to Google and find at least 2 street paintings
by each artist (a total of 4 street paintings). Be sure to describe the street
paintings if they do not have a name. Where is/was each work located?
Describe what kinds of visual communications you think each work imparts
to the viewer.
Finally, discuss whether each artist demonstrates “Social Responsibility” to
random viewers who just happen by the artworks as walkers or drivers on
the street. As a viewer, do you think the fact that these are illegally painted
should be addressed by local authorities and/or owners of these properties?
If so, what kinds of punishment or reparations would you recommend?
Maybe you think “no punishment” since this is art that can be viewed publically.
