Assessment Item – Video Recorded Powerpoint Presentation
BACKGROUND TO THIS ASSESSMENT
Health Leaders are often interested to see how our national experiences of health and health care compare on an international scale. These comparisons create a broader perspective for researchers, policymakers and the general public. Being aware of the successes and setbacks of other countries may inform how new policies, health interventions or preventative measures are developed and implemented in one’s own country. International health comparisons can help make valid comparisons of health across different countries; however, a comparison must be possible, valid and reliable. This task requires preparing a PowerPoint slide set and recording your presentation as required in the task instructions provided below.
The recorded PowerPoint presentation that you submit for assessment will require careful consideration and the use of international comparisons. If the data and methods that underlie these correlations have significant gaps (as in years of non-collection), there could be invalidity or unreliability of the results of such analysis. There are methodological issues to consider when assessing data availability and quality and deciding which countries to compare.
You should ensure that you discuss any decisions about the data used, and the countries selected should provide adequate rationale providing the limitations and assumptions are clear and duly considered. These decisions can influence the differences observed between countries and the conclusions reached. The following checklist will assist in the preparation of the required evidence to undertake this comparison.
CHECKLIST FOR COMPARATIVE INFORMATION:
Consider the following points when presenting or interpreting an international comparison of health-related data.
Data quality
Consistency- are the data defined consistently across countries?
Methodology – do all countries use the same method to collect the data?
Coverage – does the data cover similar parts of the population?
Time Period – do the data refer to the same period?
Choice of countries
Comparability – are countries sufficiently similar to support comparison?
Presentation and interpretation
Presentation – are the data presented appropriately?
Explanation – is the variation between countries adequately explained?
Underlying differentials – are differences within countries considered?
Context – can the data be used outside of an international comparison?
You must indicate where no data is available on the individual measure. However, you must be sure that you carefully research and that this is, in fact, the case.
IMPORTANT: Your recorded presentation must document EACH of the six (6) areas of comparison listed below.
THE TASK
You are to research and analyse healthcare performance data in at least two countries, one of which must be Australia and prepare a recorded PowerPoint presentation that shows the results and analysis of data from both countries broken down into the six (6) areas listed below.
Record a voice-over presentation using the PowerPoint slides lodged in the final portal.
The video presentation must be no less than 13 minutes and not more than 15 minutes. Marking of your presentation will cease after 15 minutes have elapsed, and marking penalties will be applied for presentations less than 13 minutes.
Set your PowerPoint slides to “Notes” (an option at the bottom right-hand side of the screen) and save them as a PDF. You can find the instructions for saving the PowerPoint slide set as a PDF can be found at the Microsoft support pages Save PowerPoint presentations as PDF files. Upload this file to SafeAssign Assessment Item 2 Final Portal for marking.
With the Powerpoint slides that you used to create the PDF, you must create a video and use voice over PowerPoint slides to create an MP4 video file. For instructions on how to achieve this, go to Microsoft support pages. Turn your presentation into a video. Remember, when you finish recording, you must save this as an MP4 video which is an option in the “save as” menu. Upload the MP4 video file to the SafeAssign Item 2 Final Portal for marking.
Prepare and lodge your PowerPoint presentation in the final portal as one uploaded document and the recorded PowerPoint presentation in MP4 format in the final portal for marking.
The video presentation must be no less than 13 minutes and not more than 15 minutes. Please note that marking of your presentation will cease after 15 minutes have elapsed, and your presentation will be marked on material covered during the 15 minutes maximum period. There is also marking penalties that will be applied for presentations less than 13 minutes.
IMPORTANT:
Please ensure that you have saved the files with the correct file extensions so that SafeAssign can accept them.
Additionally, ensure that you upload the PDF and the MP4 file in one session.
If you press submit before uploading both files, you will not be able to upload the second file, as the Final portal is set to allow only one submission episode with multiple files allowed within that session.
Please do not attempt to upload your work using your mobile phone as a hotspot. The video may take quite a long time to upload, depending on your internet connection speed. Almost invariably, mobile phone hot-spotting will cause a timeout unless you are connected to the internet with a reliable wi-fi connection.
If you are experiencing issues with uploading, you should contact IT Support, who are trained and have the tools to remote into your computer to see what is happening. While you can certainly inform the course convenor of your issues, support must be sourced from the IT Helpdesk.
The marking criteria for the video presentation are shown below.

1. Healthcare System Classification
Classify the health system of Australia and the other country (UK, US or Singapore) that you have selected to compare for this assessment task. You must use the classification system referred to in the course in topic 1. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM FOR THIS ASSESSMENT ITEM. You must also state the reason for classifying the healthcare system of both countries.
2. Funding
Identify the healthcare funding system dominant in the countries selected and provide the most contemporary data relating to per cent of Gross Domestic Product spent on healthcare for each country with commentary on any movement over the last 3 financial years.
3. The healthcare system governance arrangements in the country (i.e. who is responsible for what)
4. Population Health Indicators – you must compare and contrast the following population health indicators with commentary on the reasons for the results.
4.1 Maternal Mortality Rate;
4.2 Infant Mortality Rate;
4.3 Life Expectancy at Birth
5. Health System Performance Indicators:
Incidence/prevalence of:
5.1 Low birth weight infants
5.2 Obesity
5.3 Diabetes
5.4 Asthma
5.5 Rates of Ischaemic Heart Disease
4.6 Cancer rates including any available data on survival rates
6. Management of Quality and Safety in the Health System
Specifically comment on national systems for monitoring quality and safety in healthcare, third-party accreditation options for health services, and healthcare professionals’ regulation.
