What question in the domain of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination would you like to pursue in more detail? Imagine you are a writer working on a hard-hitting investigative report. Your job is to review and critically examine an important research question that we have not covered in the course or have only covered superficially. Realize that for many questions, there is no definitive “right” answer. Rather, I will be looking for how well you defend your position with empirical support.
Potential questions (Note: you can always come up with one of your own, but check with me first):
Which is more reliable when assessing a person’s true beliefs: implicit or explicit stereotypes?
Why are stereotypes so resistant to change?
Which form of contemporary prejudice is most dangerous and why?
How is benevolent prejudice problematic for society in general?
Do single-sex classes foster better learning in girls/women?
What impact does everyday sexism/racism have individuals?
What are long-term consequences of stereotype threat?
How can cross-group interactions be improved?
Is colorblindness the new modern racism or what society should strive for?
What are some specific ways to reduce prejudice in children?
Which prejudice reduction techniques work best for high-prejudiced people? for low?
Your overall thesis should be strong but concise enough for a 10-page paper
Use empirical psychology research and class material to defend your position
You should find and incorporate at least 5 primary empirical articles into this paper
What is a primary article? Primary research articles contain descriptions of research the authors did themselves. Review articles are not primary, but can be used to find primary research (check the references section).
Avoid talking me through the introduction section of another person’s article. I want to know about the research they did themselves and how that supports (or goes against) your thesis.
Summarize the major points/implications of your research
Formatting: 10 pages of written paper content, 12-pt Times New Roman, APA-style citations, APA-style title page & references page (these do not count toward your 10-page limit), double-spaced, 1-inch margins, [NO ABSTRACT NECESSARY}
Be sure to appropriately cite research references. Aim to cite a source at least once per paragraph as a general rule.
Avoid direct quotes. Strive to put everything you research into your own words. Direct quotes are rare in empirical research (even in review articles) and should be rare (or better, nonexistent) here.
