Outline for Critical Analysis
Section/Paragraph 1: introduction – what is the context of the article? Title of the article, Author(s) of the article,
Is the author a credible source? Why or why not? Leave out the overall evaluation with background information as this will come in a different part.
Section 2: Summary – State the authors main claim. Describe the main pieces of evidence listed in the article that supports the authors claim. What does the author say are the reasons you should except their opinion about the issue?
Section 3: what is your evaluation/response? Provide an evaluation of the argument what did the author do well? Not so well? Identify and explain any faulty or weak logic /reasoning used in the article. Is the evidence true/reliable? Is it relevant? Is it sufficient? Are there any hidden assumptions column logical fallacies or emotional appeals? What more could have been said, if anything? What are your concerns about the authors interpretations, approach, or conclusion? Would you recommend this article to use for research on your topic?
