Select one woman whose work made a significant contribution to the Harlem
Renaissance. Through an examination of her
work, (not her biography), explain how one of
these women contributed to the Harlem Renaissance. In order to do this, you will need to
take a position on this topic and support your point of view by engaging secondary sources outside of our class texts
and films. You
will also need to respond to relevant questions such as: Why is this woman’s work significant
as an example of the Harlem Renaissance? What does this woman’s work imply about the
significance of her contributions to this movement?
The ADW 112 Critical Essay requires that students formulate a strong thesis statement (central
argument). Your central argument
must explain how this woman contributed to the Harlem
2
Renaissance, why her work is significant, and what this woman’s
work tells us about the
broader implications of her participation in this movement. Most importantly, you will need to
draw
direct connections between the how, the why, and the what.
Your essay should be written with an informed academic audience in mind. The tone and
content should be formal and scholarly throughout. Your sources should be clearly and
consistently
cited.
Your essay should be 4 double spaced pages in length, typed in 12-point Times New Roman
font, with 1” margins all
around.
Format Guidelines
1) The thesis statement should appear in bold type.
(2) Sources should be clearly and consistently cited in the
MLA citation format. A list of works cited, corresponding to
the internal citations, should appear on a fifth page.*
(5) Attach any images or lengthy textual examples you wish
to include in an appendix (on pages 6 and following).
