Description: For the last assignment, leverage your critical eye to the neighborhood where you were raised or the neighborhood that you have the most extensive experience with. In thinking about your neighborhood, the assignment asks you to address patterns of race and class inequality and stereotypes about your neighborhood. The purpose of this assignment is to think critically about the extent to which neighborhoods, broadly, can shape people’s opportunities.
Research and brainstorm: Access “The Opportunity Atlas” (http://www.opportunityatlas.org/ (Links to an external site.)) and find the neighborhood you will be using for this paper by entering the zip code. Looking around the neighborhood today, what impressions do you have of race and class? Do your observations support or contradict the Atlas’ predictions? Why do you think these inequalities persist? Sub-questions to consider as you answer the overarching question(s):
How does your neighborhood differ from other surrounding neighborhoods or the most sought out neighborhood in your county?
How do your experiences with other families and friends in your neighborhood compare to the Atlas’ predictions?
How might your experiences in high school compare to or inform the Atlas’ predictions?
Is your neighborhood experiencing demographic change? How might the change impact the Atlas’ predictions?
Are there stereotypes about your neighborhood? How do these stereotypes compare to the Atlas’ predictions? How might these stereotypes shape how people in your neighborhood are viewed and the extent to which people want to live in your neighborhood?
Does your neighborhood have a history with redlining, white flight or gentrification? To what extent has your neighborhood been shaped by these political and economic forces?
