In Chapters 12-14 of The Past in Perspective, the author tells us that “complex societies exhibiting the construction of monumental edifices, elaborate burials, large armies, full-time artisans, and so on developed in some parts of the New World as fewer people were needed in the subsistence quest and as rulers attempted to legitimize and reinforce their positions of power and wealth.”
