Do the authors establish why the topic is important and what
we learn from the research?
Are the topics well positioned within the literature? This
means you must include a Literature Review of similar topics (Please

What is novel or unique about the paper?
Have the authors proposed reasonable identification
strategies and used proper econometric approaches? (identification
strategy: identifies the assumptions needed for statistical estimates to
be given a causal interpretation. “What
is your identification strategy?” = “What research design (and
assumptions) are you using?” What is the identification strategy? An
identification strategy is the manner in which a researcher uses
observational data (i.e., data not generated by a randomized trial) to
approximate a real experiment. Are there issues with endogeneity of the
explanatory variables, which are not discussed in the paper? Can you
think why the dependent variable might be used to explain variation in
the regressors? Are there other influences on the dependent variable that
are not included in the regression? Do you think that they are correlated
with the regressors? If so, what is the anticipated direction of the
bias? Suggest other potential sources of bias. For each source of bias,
write the data generating process, the estimating equation and the
estimator. Explain why the estimator is biased.
Have the authors been thorough and provided sufficient
attention to detail.
Are the authors’ claims substantiated by the evidence?
Do you buy the conclusions? (in some sense, every paper has ‘flaws’, but
the question is whether they’re serious or mild, whether they have
consequences for the story of the paper).
Is the article well written? Why or why not?
Conclusion and How different or similar are these documents
to published papers that we have studied? “Conclusion” Why do we care
about your results? Do they have policy or managerial implications?
Your
paper must include a standpoint from yourself whether you agree with the
author/authors claim or not and explain why.
One thing that must be clear is: in the references/bibliography you are
expected to look for additional sources other than the documentary itself. The
documentary itself does not count as a reference. Likewise, if you do not have
a direct quote of any of said “outside” refereces you may not include
them as part of your bibliography. If you Google search something, but you do
not use it in your verbaige please do not include as part of your references
“google search” You
may only use as a reference/bibliography something you mention or quote in your
essay.
